What the OKC climate demands of a commercial landscape
Clay soil decides establishment
Much of the metro sits on dense clay. Water moves through it slowly, so beds that look well drained in spring hold water against roots for days after a storm, then shrink hard enough in late summer to shear those same roots. We amend planting areas and set bed grades so water leaves rather than collects. Where grading cannot fix drainage, we select material that tolerates wet feet.
Wind and hail recovery planning
Exposed parking islands and building corners funnel wind, and young trees staked against it lean permanently if the species is wrong for the position. We place larger material where it is sheltered and use tougher, lower plantings in exposed spots. Hail is a recovery question. A property with a cutback and feeding schedule regrows; a property without one gets replanted every few years.
Irrigation set by season
A controller left on one schedule all year overwaters in spring and underwaters in July. We adjust run times seasonally and check coverage for dry spots, overspray onto pavement, and heads blocked by growth. On a large site, those small faults are where most of the water bill goes, and they rarely show up until the turf does.
